Marine Corp Marathon "The Peoples Marathon" October 28th, 2008 Boston Marathon Qualifier Personal Q&A
Why do you compete?
Not to sound cocky, but because I can. I'm healthy. What a shameful waste it would be not to rip up a course when so, so many individuals can't/don't/won't get out there (for a myriad of reasons). I am of the 1% of the population engaged in multi-sport. The race is the carrot dangling out there, which gives me the legitimate excuse to train like I do. I set the goal - then chase it with everything I have.
Do you train? What does your schedule look like?
My training schedule encompasses 600 annual hours. I train seven days a week to some degree or another. Most days encompass two-a-day workouts and a brick on the weekend. It's a fine balance between the priorities of family, work, and training (in that order).
Why do you like this sport?
Asked this, I always find it difficult to articulate the deep seeded love for a) some good old-fashioned competition b) the camaraderie of the sport (mine is a attitude of gratitude) c) continually testing and bettering oneself d) satisfying the gear-head in me.
What has been your most embarrassing moment?
Unrelated to sport - In a very crowded elevator with various Heads of State, a lot of chatter (none of which I could comprehend since it was mostly in Russian) a Russian interpreter sheepishly whispered in my ear "Mr. Gorbachev is requesting that you lean forward slightly so that he may remove his hand from the rail of which you are seemingly sitting on" ...Why yes, it's pleasure to meet you too, Mr. President.
Some Personal Information About Me:
I am planning and intend on a single-handed, around-the-world sailing circumnavigation in the future.
A ship in harbor is safe -- but that is not what ships are built for.

Rik, Recovery is progressing slowly. However, work is busy at DHL and I am doing a little archery hunting as well as starting up a coaching business www.ETScoaching.com and managing my multisport, team www.cincyexpress.org so I'm not bored in the least. All my best to you and your family during the holiday season. Take care brother and I hope to see at an event or two in 2009.
Best Regards, Joe |
